I grew up in a very small town. My first year in college was in Chicago. To say it was daunting going from a small town to one of the largest cities in the country is an understatement. Chicago was so big and so complex that I thought I would never know my way around the city. But a friend did an amazing thing for me – he took me to the tallest building in the city (known at that time as the Sears Tower). And from the observation deck, I saw a ‘birds-eye-view’ of the city. At that distance I saw all of the major roads, landmarks, and areas of what makes up the city of Chicago. In short, I got my bearings, so to speak. And in a similar way, the Bible seems at first to be so big and so complex that most people just give up trying to study it because they just can’t seem to get an understanding of how to get around in it as they read it. This study of “God’s Timeline Through the Bible” provides you with that kind of ‘birds-eye-view’ of the span of the entire Bible. Having gotten the major flow of God’s timeline, then you can do a more detailed study of God’s word. Most importantly, it makes it so you have a particular context in mind whenever and wherever you read a portion from God’s word. And this isn’t a man-made idea – for God Himself records His timeline in the Bible and provides it as a help in getting around in His word. God establishes a timeline, for example, in Leviticus 26, and in the book of Daniel, as well as the Lord’s own teaching in such passages as Matthew 24. My hope is that understanding God’s timeline through the Bible will not only increase your joyful reading and studying of God’s word, but that it will also provide you with a way of not getting caught up in corrupt doctrine and the mishandling of God’s word.
