Beginning in Romans 6:14, the apostle Paul teaches us that the effectual working of our sanctified position “in Christ” requires that we be “not under the law, but under grace.” Sadly though, most Christians today still seek to keep the Law of Moses, or at the very least keep the Ten Commandments, as the means by which we are to put our Christian lives into practice and live pleasing in God’s sight. But as Paul sets forth in the remainder of Romans 6 and all of Romans chapter 7, trying to keep the Ten Commandments does not only fail to squelch sin in your life, it actually makes you sin much worse than ever before! In Romans 7 Paul sets forth the full proof that far from ever producing a pleasing, functional life in God’s sight by keeping the Law, the Law actually puts your sanctified, functional life to DEATH – ending in a “wretched” existence. But the good news is that grace has the power to do what the Law could never do – grace can squelch sin in your life and motivate you to do good in God’s sight. Therefore only “under grace” can you live pleasing unto God and put your sanctified life “in Christ” into practice.
